Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) together with 3M Malaysia, launched the ‘3M Road Safety Award for Southeast Asia’ recently. The award, which is open to individuals, government and non-government organisations intends to encourage and recognise road safety initiatives that are impactful, innovative, sustainable and replicable in Southeast Asia.
Southeast Asia nations have been experiencing tremendous economic growth and expansion in recent years, however road traffic crashes and road casualties have not really improved as desired. In 2011, it was estimated that more than 75,000 people died in road crashes in the region and many more sustained long term injuries. Thus, improving road safety outcomes in the region is becoming more critical as we approach the remaining years of the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020 and before moving towards greater and broader challenge of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 2030 which aims to make the world a better place to live, for everyone.
Submission for the 3M Road Safety Award for Southeast Asia commences at 12.00am on 15th March 2018 and ends at 11.59pm on 31 July 2018. Interested participants can find more information, including Terms & Conditions, and submit their entries at http://award.miros.gov.my
The evaluation criteria of the award will be based on four core aspects:
Impact: The relative reduction figure, coverage of the initiative and cost to benefit ratio
Innovation: What is new, what makes the program different from current initiatives in Southeast Asia
Sustainability: Is the program continuous or a one-off initiative, including stability and duration of the program
Replicability: Measures the level of replicability across urban, state and national areas within the region
The evaluation process will entail two tiers. The first tier will involve competition between submissions within the same country. Submissions with top scores for that country will then compete with top score submissions across other Southeast Asia countries in the second evaluation tier. Four winners will be announced during an award ceremony on 4th Dec 2018. The grand prize is a trip to the United States of America, will include visit to the 3M Innovation Centre and Transportation Research Center. The winner will have an opportunity to witness the demonstration on some of the latest technological developments in the field of Road Safety and Connected Roads.
